Liquid City is a design practice specialising in AI and XR (Augmented and Virtual Reality), with a focus on shaping a positive future for technology in society.

We’re currently seeking a freelance Technical Artist / Animator to join our internal team on a short-term prototype (May-June). You’ll help us bring a fluid, stylised character to life in Unity, blending real-time animation with custom shaders and effects.

About the role

The project is a short-term freelance contract, but may extend. We’re open to senior and midweight-level candidates, who can bring creative polish and imagination as well as technical artistry. You might be animating expressive loops one day, and crafting beautiful shaders the next. This is a role for someone who’s excited by emerging platforms, and who wants to invent as much as implement.

Responsibilities

• Animate a stylised 3D character in Unity using real-time workflows

• Design and implement shaders and VFX that enhance motion and presence

• Work with concept art and storyboards to realise the character in context

• Collaborate closely with the project team to refine the look, feel and performance

• Iterate fast, and help us prototype something truly original

Requirements

• Strong experience in Unity for both animation and visual development

• Proficiency in character animation—stylised, expressive, and emotionally resonant

• Experience writing shaders (HLSL or Shader Graph) for creative visuals

• A good eye for motion, timing and visual storytelling

• Comfortable working independently and collaborating in a multidisciplinary team

Bonus if you’ve worked with AR or character-led experiences before—but we care more about artistry, craft, and the ability to deliver.
